International Desk (Channel TT): The United States, Canada and Mexico have decided to close the border for another 30 days to prevent coronavirus infection. The three countries will keep their borders closed till July 21 to avoid essential travel.
U.S. Acting Secretary of State Chad Wolf said in a statement Tuesday that unnecessary travel to Canada and Mexico would not be allowed. The border will remain closed until the administration ensures that travel is safe.
He added that the extension of the border closure would keep Americans safe. We have contacted our partners in Canada and Mexico about this. They also agreed on this issue. They said it was wise to lift the travel ban at the moment.
On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the border was a source of weakness. Therefore, the border closure period will be extended for another 30 days. The restrictions were announced on March 18 and extended in April.
"The decision was made to protect the people on both sides of the border, and we will continue to fight Kovid-19," Trudeau said.
The Mexican foreign minister said the same thing in a Twitter message.
However, people engaged in emergency services such as healthcare, air crew and truck drivers delivering food and medicine will be exempt from the ban, the statement said.
