International Desk (Channel TT): US-China relations have worsened since the Corona epidemic began earlier this year. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is also scheduled to meet with a Chinese delegation in Hawaii this week to discuss the dispute.
A source close to the matter said on Tuesday. This is going to be the first high-level meeting to be held amid intense tensions between the two countries.
In addition to intense strategic rivalries, the world's top two countries have been embroiled in a conflict over the coronavirus epidemic in recent months. The move by China to impose new security laws on Hong Kong is also a source of tension between the two countries.
Experts say the relationship between the two countries has reached its lowest point in years. President Donald Trump also called for a severance of ties with China in mid-May.
Pompeo will also meet with Yang Jiechi, a senior Chinese foreign policy official and a member of the Communist Party's powerful politburo, The South China Morning Post reported, citing unnamed sources.
A diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meeting was expected to take place at Hikam Air Base in Hawaii. Another source said Pompeo is expected to leave Washington on Tuesday. So this meeting may be held on Wednesday.
Earlier, Pompeo and Young spoke by telephone on April 15 to discuss the epidemic coronavirus. This is their first meeting after that telephone conversation.
According to a source, Pompeo and Young will discuss coronavirus, arms control, trade, Hong Kong, North Korea and top measures against journalists.
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the two countries continue to maintain contact through diplomatic channels. More information regarding this will be informed later.
Meanwhile, the US Department of State and the White House have not commented on the meeting.
